No Internships due to COVID-19*
*The following description has been included for future planning purposes. Professionalism in the Workplace/Internship Number of Students: Juniors & Seniors who have a 3.0 or higher – Must have placement during fall semester. Cost: $2 - Must have own transportation Instructor: Mrs. Erickson Not just a job shadow. The J Term internship program was created to help students learn about future educational and career options, realize their gifts and abilities, and provide an opportunity to serve our community. During J Term, seniors may participate in internships in one of their top three career choices. The first week of J Term will be their actual internship. The hours of the internship will be determined by the employee they are shadowing. They will be preparing resumes, filling out job applications, and doing mock interviews to prepare them for any real-life situation they may experience in their future work environment. Students must be placed and meet with the business professional during the fall semester in order to participate in this course. |
“Intro to Cybersecurity”
Number of Students: High School Students – 5 Maximum Cost: $35 (additional $20 for certification – optional) Instructor: Professor Rice This course is an introductory cybersecurity course that covers the fundamental concepts of information security and network defense. Those who are interested in pursuing a career in information security will learn the various fundamentals of information security and network defense, as well as what to expect in the field of network defense. The interactive labs component of this course ensures that student receive the hands-on, practical experience to give them the skills necessary for a future in cybersecurity. Learn a holistic overview of the key components of information security such as Identification, Authentication and Authorization, Virtualization and Cloud Computing, Wireless Network, Mobile Device and IoT Device and Data Security. This active learning course ensures that students receive the hands-on, practical experience required to give them the skills necessary for a future in cybersecurity. |
“Intro to the Medieval Era!”
Number of Students: All Students – 12 Maximum Cost: $20 Instructor: Levi Berg & Ian Nemeth Medieval European history is essential for understanding Christianity and society today. This course will study each of the important players of Medieval Europe and will make a connection between the present and the past. |
“Smith Globe Trotters”
Number of Students: High School Students - 12 Maximum Cost: $0 Instructor: Miss Smith If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go? Get ready for an adventure as you explore the ins-and-outs of traveling. How do you plan for a trip? What sort of things are a MUST to pack, and what things should you leave behind? Can you travel on a budget? How do you navigate public transportation? With Miss Smith as your guide, start exploring the world God has created and get ready to plan your next adventure! |
“Cake Boss"
Number of Students: All Students – 12 Maximum Cost: $45 Instructor: Mrs. DeBella Ever see those beautiful cakes at weddings or baby showers and wish you could do something like that? Well...you can! Choose "Cake Boss" for one of your courses over J-Term and learn all the professional decorator's tips and tricks! During the first week, students will learn to ready a decorator bag, color frosting, and create several different beautiful borders and drop flowers with leaves. Method of holding the bag, positioning for the various type of decorations, and amount of applied pressure needed for beautiful and successful decor will be taught, along with necessary kitchen-cleaning skills. During the second week, students will learn to level a practice cake and prepare it with a crumb layer, the proper method of frosting the entire cake, and tricks for a perfectly smooth finish. They will then decorate their cakes with white and colored frosting using their decorating skills. Grade will be earned on neatness and proper execution of decorating techniques. They will then show off their beautiful creations to their peers before eating them (their cakes, not their peers!) Students will be able to keep their tips and spatulas and any leftover decorating bags. |
“Sewing 101”
Number of Students: All students – 10 Maximum (no repeat students) Cost: Approximate cost: $20, actual cost will vary and depend on sale price, what fabric is chosen, and how much fabric is needed Instructor: Mrs. DeYoung This is a basic sewing class where we will learn the basics of a sewing machine - how to thread the machine, wind and thread the bobbin, adjust the tension and stitch length, and use different stitches. We will also learn how to read a pattern, purchase fabric, and notions, cut out the pattern, and sew a finished garment (pajama pants). “Game of Life”
Number of Students: All students – 15 Maximum Cost: $0 Instructor: Mr. Most In this two-week course, you will be playing a game that will challenge you to think financially. The game is based on principles the Bible teaches about managing money. Students will learn how to use money wisely in the following ways: · Giving · Living debt-free · Saving · Budgeting · Investing This game attempts to capture the essence of financial decision making and stewardship in a simple, easy to play game. Students will choose a profession and lifestyle. They will encounter various circumstances that are both in and out of their control and will be forced to make life decisions. |
“Exercise and Nutrition”
Number of students: High School Only – 15 Maximum Cost: $10 Instructor: Mr. Thiele Students will learn the impact of physical activity on individual health. Students will also learn the essentials of human nutrition that improve and sustain optimal performance for sport and exercise. Discuss the effects of eating disorders (in both male and female athletes), weight management and sport nutrition resources. The class will culminate in students creating a personalized nutrition and exercise plan for themselves or for a fictional athlete. |
“Living in Light”
Number of students: Female Students Only – 15 Maximum Cost: $25 Instructor: Mrs. Thiele In today’s world, it is incredibly too easy to become distracted, disorganized, and overwhelmed. In this class, we are going to learn how to unwind and become more intentional with our thoughts and actions. We will utilize yoga, Pilates, journaling, and mindfulness activities to assist in managing daily tasks while keeping a relaxed demeanor. Each student will leave class feeling refreshed and ready to take on the rest of their day. The cost for this class will cover the purchasing of the supplies needed for this class which will include each student keeping their personal eye pillow (used during yoga) and their own gratitude book. |
"Japanese Language and Culture 101"
Number of Students: All students – 10 Maximum Cost: $15 Instructor: Mrs. Most Do you ever want to go to Japan? This is about as close as you will get without leaving Kankakee County. You will be immersed in Japanese experiences including speaking, writing, trying, and cooking food, playing games, plus learning some basic geography and history of Japan. We will also be using the Duolingo language app to learn the basics and track your progress. WARNING: Do not take this course if you want to stay in your comfort zone! |
“Intro to Illustration”
Number of students: All students - 10 Maximum Cost: $50-$60 (average cost for all materials; price may vary depending on brands purchased; utilize sales/coupons!) Instructor: Mrs. Robinson This is a basic into to illustration class. We will be going over the basics of what illustrating is and learning various techniques as well as developing and enhancing your own personal styles. We will do both small and larger projects through the duration of this class. |
“Sports Psychology / Leadership”
Number of students: High School Only – 15 Maximum Cost: $0 Instructor: Mr. Thiele Students will study how individuals behave in sport, while also taking that knowledge and applying it to performance enhancement strategies. “Get a Clue”
Number of Students: All Students – 12 Maximum Cost: $10 Instructor: Miss Smith Calling all detectives! Gather evidence, avoid red herrings, and figure out the modus operandi to solve “whodunit”. In this class we’ll talk about everything mystery related by reading some of the best mystery authors literature has to offer, identifying the killers before the mafia strikes again, solving puzzling scenarios, and “taking a stab” at writing your own mystery story. Participate in a live action mystery game where YOU may be a suspect. You won’t want to miss out-the game is afoot! |
“Interior Design”
Number of students: 12 Maximum Cost: $10 Instructor: Mrs. Thiele Where are my HGTV lovers at?! Join me as we channel our inner “Chip and Joanna” while learning about what interior design is truly about. Each student will be taking note of different colors, textures, and architectural design, to complete their class project of designing a style board. Not only will each student be designing a space of their own, but they will be doing so while keeping within a design budget. The cost for this class will go towards purchasing supplies for each student to create their style board for their space. |
“Grace Theatre Project Variety Show”
Number of students: 20 Maximum Cost: $10 Instructor: Mr. Greene & Mrs. LeRoy We need lots of students to make this work! Students will choose to work with costuming, props, writing, directing, and performing to put together a fun comic variety show. Here is a description of each job: Costuming: Will help choose and fit costumes to actors. This will include being creative with materials. Props: Will decide on the props for each section, gather them, and work as stagehands to rotate them. Writing: Coming up with creative ideas for comic sketches and communicating them to a team of directors. Directing: Helping Mrs. LeRoy and Mr. Greene pull all things together. Performing: Students who love to act, sing, or play instruments to perform! |
“Candle-Making”
Number of Students: 6 Maximum Cost: $90 (please see break-down of items) Instructor: Mrs. DeBella In this J-term you will be learning the skills of basic candle making, along with some tips and tricks that make it not only the most totally awesome DIY EVER but also cost-efficient. If you absolutely LOVE candles, this J-term is perfect! Activities include making our own wicks, cleaning and recycling old candle jars, making wick holders, several different sized and scented candles, wax melts, and decorative candle holders. Parents need to be aware of the fact that their child will be working over open flames with hot glass jars, boiling water, and melted wax, all of which pose possible injury. Only mature and capable students with a serious interest in this skill will be admitted, and it is entirely to my discretion who those will be. This course is a bit “pricey” and due to the fact that all materials need to be ordered online and shipped from various suppliers, fees must be paid upfront before we break for Christmas. Please contact Mrs. DeBella for the list of all supplies needed for this course; they will all be purchased by me on behalf of your student to ensure the proper materials are used. |
